Extra-Corporal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) has increasingly been utilized over the past decade to assist with the maintenance of functional mobility and prevention of functional decline for individuals with severe, end-stage heart or lung disease awaiting transplant. ECMO mobility programs and knowledge of patients having survived long ECMO runs increased throughout the world secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic. Improvements in ECMO technology and newly published literature demonstrating the safety of mobility of the ECMO patient despite cannulation strategy lends to the importance of this course for all providers to become more familiar with ECMO mobility.

Benefits to Watching:

  • Immediately improve your understanding of the basic medical indications for extra-corporal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support and the basic mechanics of how the device provides cardiac or pulmonary support
  • Discuss the role of the interdisciplinary team in the medical plan of the patient on ECMO support including potential algorithms utilized for hemodynamic stability and mobility safety screening criteria
